Piling in Preston

Mini Piling Contractor in Preston

Sometimes ground conditions prevent the use of traditional foundations, which is when piling provides a reliable solution for home extensions and building projects. We carry out mini piling and underpinning works across Preston, helping homeowners and builders install stable foundations where deep excavation becomes impractical, physically or cost wise.

Properties in Preston often present challenges such as filled ground, shared drainage runs and restricted access, all of which can make standard trench foundations unsuitable. Piling allows foundations to be installed efficiently while meeting structural engineer and building control requirements.

We regularly work alongside structural engineers installing piles, reinforcement and concrete in line with the specified design, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish.

We generally provide a structural engineers design or can work from one you already have. Send me whatever information you have (plans or a design) and we will get back to you with a price.

We cover all of Lancashire, from Lancaster in the north to Burnley in the east and Blackpool on the west coast. We are ideally located to respond quickly to projects in and around Preston.

Piled ring beam for extension near Preston

Piling Preston – This job shown here was for a single storey side extension in Longridge which was being faced with natural stone. The wall being put on the foundation was to be two skins of 100 mm blockwork with 100 mm cavity, then faced with 200 mm of stone. This meant the beam had to be wider than standard.

Piled foundation concreted in Preston

Concrete was vibrated during placement to remove trapped air and ensure the beam reached its full strength. The majority of the time the concrete is a c35 mix, which denotes the strength class. We level it using the laser so your bricklayer has a nice surface to work from.

Frequently Asked Questions About Piling in Preston

How deep do piles go in Preston?

Basically it is pot luck. We send the piles in until they meet a resistance which is specified by the manufacturer of the mole, or by an engineer for a rig. As a whole in Preston they don’t go as deep as areas such as Blackpool but it depends where you are. I have piled next to a stream on Tag Lane at Ingol and also just off New Hall Lane as you are coming into Preston and both areas went around 6-8 metres deep. One job in the centre of Preston all piles went about 4 m. But you do never know until the piles are driven.

Do I need piling for my extension in Preston?

Usually it’s building control who tell you to pile, or your builder may if they have come across it beforehand. The main reason to pile is that the natural ground is deemed insufficient to hold the weight of the new building. It may well be the case your existing house has been sat on that ground perfectly well for years, but the rules have since changed and now you need to pile. Other reasons may be because there are drains nearby, trees or the ground has been made up which is common with new houses.
